Campfire rules are not the same in April and August, and they can tighten quickly in a dry year. Confirm the current restriction before you load firewood. Remember that pallets are never acceptable here regardless of fire rules, because of the nails.
The highway is the trip. Nevada DOT conditions matter in winter, when a front can close or slow the route long before it affects the dunes themselves. Coming from Fallon, remember the entrance is a left turn with no left-turn lane, which is worse in poor visibility.
Halloween brings eight to ten thousand people and Easter is close behind. Those are not bad weekends, they are just a completely different trip: arrive earlier, expect the good camping to be taken, and plan the ride around crowds. If you want the quiet version, midweek is a different place, and Tuesday and Wednesday are fee free.
Wind is the variable that most often decides whether a day is any good, and it is nearly guaranteed at some point in a visit. Storm distance is deceptive across the Great Basin. Treat the forecast as the start of the conversation and the flags in camp as the end of it.
BLM runs a helmet giveaway here with Renown Children's Hospital and the Nevada Outdoor School, and cleanup and trail work days come up through the season. Both are worth catching if the timing lines up, particularly if you are bringing kids whose helmets have seen better days.
