Your last full-service stop
There is nothing to buy at Sand Mountain. Everything the weekend needs comes from Fallon, from Harmon Station on the way out, or from Middlegate if you are arriving from the east.
About 25 miles west of the dunes on U.S. 50, and the practical base for the whole trip. Fuel, groceries, water, food, lodging, parts, and medical care. Fallon also sells whip flags, which is the item people most often discover they are missing. It is home to NAS Fallon, where the Navy runs its strike fighter tactics program, so do not be surprised by what goes overhead.
The last stop on U.S. 50 as the highway turns from east to south. Fuel, a deli, Wi-Fi, and Sand Mountain recreation passes over the counter. If you did not buy the pass online and you are already past Fallon, this is the place, and the Wi-Fi is worth knowing about because service thins out from here.
Coming from the east, Middlegate is the nearest stop and it has fuel. It also has a reputation for the best burgers in this stretch of the Great Basin, which is a low bar geographically and a genuinely high one in practice. Worth building into the drive rather than treating as an emergency backup.
Coming from Fallon the entrance is a left across oncoming traffic with no left-turn lane. Signal well before you slow. This is a hazard for you and for whoever is behind a loaded trailer that is decelerating in a through lane, and it catches first-time visitors every season.
Work out the tow rig's range with trailer weight, headwind, and idling included, then add the return leg. Fill the machines and any approved containers in town. Station hours and card readers are not guaranteed, so know your second option before you leave pavement rather than after.
Wind or a winter front can shut down riding entirely, and a group with no alternative plan just sits in a trailer. Fallon has enough going on to salvage an afternoon, and the Sand Springs Pony Express Station sits inside the recreation area itself, which is a genuinely good hour that asks nothing of the weather.
Halloween and Easter fill things up. If your plan depends on a room in Fallon, a service appointment, or a rental, confirm it before the tow rig leaves home. On an ordinary midweek trip none of that is a concern.
